Founded on August 26, 1992, as the successor to the Ukrainian branch of the Soviet «Promstroybank».
The founder and first chairman of the board of Prominvestbank in 1992–2008, Volodymyr Matviyenko, was the first chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine in 1991–1992. Prominvestbank was founded through the corporatization of the state-owned Promstroybank, during which, according to Matviyenko, funds worth $1 billion were channeled to the state budget. The bank was among the top three largest for a long time, but by 2008 had fallen to 11th place by assets. Matviyenko owned more than 50% of the bank’s shares.
